The problem

A broken sitemap goes unnoticed, and nobody tells you.

  • Invalid XML, or more than 50,000 URLs in one file
  • URLs on the wrong host
  • Redirecting, broken or duplicate URLs
  • Lastmod dates in the wrong format
The solution

Sona shows you every file and every URL.

  • Sitemap found from robots.txt or /sitemap.xml
  • Every file checked against the sitemaps.org protocol
  • A sample of URLs fetched to confirm they return 200
  • Full URL list as a table and CSV

The basics

What is an XML sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a file that lists the pages of your site for crawlers. It tells them which URLs exist and when each one last changed, so they can find your pages without following every link.

This is step one, not the finish line. A page also needs clear structure and tags AI engines can read. This free checker looks at your sitemap. The free AI Crawl Checker tests whether AI crawlers can reach your site.

How it works

Check your sitemap in three steps

Three steps from address to full URL list.

1

Find

Enter a sitemap URL, or just your site's address. If you enter an address, we find the sitemap from robots.txt or /sitemap.xml.

2

Validate

We follow sitemap indexes and check every file against the sitemaps.org protocol. We look at format, URL limits, valid same-host URLs, lastmod dates and duplicates.

3

Spot-check

We fetch a sample of the listed URLs to confirm they return 200. You get the full URL list as a table and as a CSV.

What this checks

We follow sitemap indexes and check every file against the sitemaps.org protocol: format, URL limits, valid same-host URLs, lastmod dates and duplicates.

Where it looks

How the sitemap is found.

  • robots.txt, /sitemap.xml or the URL you enter
  • Sitemap indexes are followed

The file

What each file must be.

  • Real sitemap XML
  • Within the 50,000-URL limit

The URLs

What every URL must be.

  • A valid absolute URL on the same host
  • A <lastmod> date in W3C Datetime format, no duplicates
  • A sample returns HTTP 200

We fetch a sample of the listed URLs to confirm they return 200, and give you the full URL list as a table and CSV.

Real impact

AFTER THE FIXPass
  • Valid XML
  • every sampled URL returns 200
  • no duplicates
Why it matters

Why a clean sitemap matters

A clean sitemap is how crawlers find your pages.

Redirects waste crawl budget

Redirecting, broken or noindexed URLs waste crawl budget and send search engines mixed signals about which version of a page to index.

Search crawlers use sitemaps

Search crawlers like Googlebot and Bingbot use sitemaps to discover pages.

Declare it in robots.txt

A sitemap declared in robots.txt is the safest way to make sure any crawler can find it.

From snapshot to system

This check is a snapshot. Sona is the system.

A valid sitemap helps crawlers find your pages. Sona Agent Analytics shows which AI crawlers read your pages and how many visitors they send back. AI Search Insights shows whether you are cited in AI answers.

AI Search Insights

"Am I being cited in AI answers, and how do I compare to competitors?"

  • Track the prompts your buyers actually ask across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude, DeepSeek, Grok & more
  • See your rankings and share of answer against competitors
  • Find which sources answer engines cite, and which of your pages get surfaced

Agent Analytics

"Are AI crawlers reading my site, and is AI search sending me traffic?"

  • See AI crawler activity by bot, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended
  • Measure referral traffic clicking through from AI answers
  • Page-level view of what gets crawled and what drives AI referrals

Can AI crawlers actually reach you?

This tool checks one thing. The free AI Crawl Checker tests 47 AI crawlers live against your page - robots.txt, firewalls, rate limits, noindex, sitemaps and more - and gives you the fix for each one that fails.

FAQ

Sitemap Validator FAQs

Quick answers about sitemaps and this validator.

It finds your sitemap (from robots.txt, /sitemap.xml, or the URL you enter), follows sitemap indexes, and checks each file: that it's real sitemap XML, the 50,000-URL limit, that every <loc> is a valid absolute URL on the same host, that <lastmod> dates use W3C Datetime format, duplicate URLs, and whether a sample of the URLs actually return HTTP 200.

Yes - every result includes the full URL list (up to 10,000) with each URL's last-modified date, and a Download CSV button. It works as an XML sitemap parser for any site, not just your own.

Anywhere on your site, as long as crawlers can find it. The reliable way is a Sitemap: line in robots.txt (e.g. Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml), which every major crawler reads. You can also submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

A file that lists other sitemaps instead of pages, used when a site has more than 50,000 URLs or wants to split sitemaps by section. The validator checks the first 10 sitemaps an index lists. An index can't list another index - crawlers won't follow nested indexes.

A sitemap should list only final, indexable URLs. Redirecting, broken or noindexed URLs waste crawl budget and send search engines mixed signals about which version of a page to index.

Search crawlers like Googlebot and Bingbot use sitemaps to discover pages, and AI answers built on their indexes - Google's AI Overviews, Copilot - benefit from that. AI-specific crawlers rarely document how they discover pages, so a sitemap declared in robots.txt is the safest way to make sure any crawler can find it.
